Some evenings stay with you because of the person beside you, even when nothing special was planned.
“Shall we pick up some milk?” Samantha asked after work, still wearing white flowers in her hair. At the door, I gave the stretched hem of my T-shirt a small tug. For a trip to the local supermarket, only one of us seemed quite so dressed up.

There Was Only One Thing on the List
“Aren’t you leaving the flowers here?” “Did you see a sign saying flower crowns aren’t allowed at the supermarket?”
Samantha slipped on a light jacket and picked up the keys. It hardly needed an argument, so I put on my shoes. Just before closing the door, I noticed a little leaf caught at the edge of her flowers. When I removed it, her “thank you” suddenly sounded quite ordinary.

More Decisions at the Chilled Shelves
We were meant to take one carton of milk and go home, but stopped at the desserts. Samantha placed two cups side by side: strawberry and roasted green tea.
“Which one?” “Whichever you want.” “I’m asking because I can’t decide.”
We bought one of each in the end, with two spoons. The flower crown that had looked so grand now seemed a little funny under the fluorescent lights. Samantha didn’t seem to mind. She was arranging a corner of the basket so neither cup would tip over.

An Arrangement for the Walk Home
When I offered to carry the shopping, Samantha handed me only the milk. Apparently, she was carrying the desserts herself.
“That one’s heavy.” “And those?” “Important.”
By the time we reached the door, I had forgotten the comeback I was planning. Before either of us had taken our shoes off, we were already discussing space in the fridge.
